Still no decision on ‘homeless elder’

Supporters of Genevieve McGinnis met with the Rainy River First Nations band council Monday night to discuss her housing application, but no decision has been made yet.
“Last night, they didn’t decide again,” McGinnis’ daughter, Leona McGinnis, said Tuesday. “I took them a letter last night reminding them [of their promise].
“We’re regrouping again on the weekend [to] plan our next step because they seem to be stalling,” she noted. “And my mom’s still without a home.”
McGinnis wants an apartment in the newer complex at Manitou Rapids but the band council offered her one at the seniors’ complex, which she refused.
She said she never applied for an apartment at the seniors’ complex.
McGinnis also said she gave up her residence in Fort Frances because she was led to believe she was getting an apartment at Manitou Rapids.
Supporters of McGinnis occupied the band office for more than 24 hours last month over the housing situation.
