It’s official–the name of the future development at the site of the former Rainy Lake Hotel will be called “Rainy Lake Square.”
In a report from Travis Rob, secretary of the Rainy Lake Market Square Advisory Committee, he noted the space has been referred to as the “Rainy Lake Market Square” since the old Rainy Lake Hotel structure was demolished.
This name stemmed from the former hotel and the preliminary work completed by the BIA showing a traditional market constructed at this location.
“At this point in the development, as close to tender as the design is, it is important to finalize the name of the space upon completion,” noted Rob.
The name was discussed at the Feb. 8 meeting of the Rainy Lake Market Square Advisory Committee and it was decided “market” would be dropped.
“In keeping with the heritage of the space and the lake elements contained within the design, it was important to the committee to keep ‘Rainy Lake’ as part of the overall name,” Rob said.
“It was, however, felt that the space is much more than just a market,” he added.
“Therefore, it is the recommendation of the Rainy Lake Market Square Advisory Committee that the development be officially called the ‘Rainy Lake Square.'”
Council approved the recommendation at its regular meeting last night.
At the meeting, council also:
•heard a 2016 year-end police activity report from OPP detachment commander Insp. Steve Shouldice;
•heard a presentation from Matt Soprovich, executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, asking for financial assistance;
•agreed to amend the Traffic Control Bylaw 21/14 to change a parking stall at the library and authorize that an amending bylaw be prepared for execution;
•agreed to allow the “holding provision” to be removed from the property located at Lot 21 on Minnie Avenue North, and further that the property be re-zoned to R1 from R1-H, with conditions registered on title of the land to be signed off prior to any development;
•agreed to include a $7 per capita funding request from the Rainy River Future Development Corp. in the 2017 general operational budget;
•agreed to amend the terms of reference for the Council Remuneration Committee to complete a review of the travel policy as it pertains to meals and mileage, and bring a recommendation back to council;
•agreed to adopt an updated student wages report; and
•approved the submission of the Provincial Child Care Wage Enhancement Grant to the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board at no financial cost to the town.
