The Northwest Catholic District School Board will review its special education programming with a special report at its special meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the board office (next to St. Francis School).
“We’re requested by the Ministry of Education to list all the special education guidelines and services we provide every two years,” Education Director Carol-Lynne Oldale noted.
“This is a comprehensive plan that outlines things like the progression of students from classroom instruction to getting more intensive instruction, parent guides for placement requirements, early identification for special needs, everything,” she noted, adding the report is “about three inches thick.”
In accordance with Regulation 306, each school board is required to maintain a special education plan, to review it annually, to amend it from time to time to meet the current needs of its exceptional students, and to submit any amendments to the ministry for review.
The development for the plan has been an ongoing process, with special education co-ordinator Teresa Dennis having consulted with teachers, principals, parents, and other others to ensure the plan complies with ministry requirements.
The special education advisory committee approved the plan at its June 20 meeting.

In other news, the board’s 2001-02 final budget will be up for approval tonight. A preliminary report on the budget received at the board’s June 16 meeting projected a balanced budget of $11,599,141.
Also tonight, the board will swear in its First Nations trustee for the upcoming school year.
