Special cross arrives tonight

Young people at St. Mary’s Church are completing final preparations for the World Youth Day Cross, which arrives here Monday night.
The cross, which was given to the youth of the world by Pope John Paul II in 1984 in honour of the first World Youth Day, will arrive at St. Mary’s Church at 8 p.m.
“It’s a privilege to have the cross here,” said Diane Noonan, who is co-ordinating the local effort. “Normally Fort Frances and other smaller communities are left out of things like this.”
The cross, en route from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, will spend the night in Fort Frances before continuing on its journey Tuesday morning.
Youth at St. Mary’s Church have prepared a ceremony for when the cross arrives, and many local parishioners have volunteered to stand vigil with it throughout the night.
“We’re all quite excited that it is coming here,” Noonan enthused.
The cross is part of preparations for World Youth Day, which will be held July 23-28 in Toronto. People aged 16-35 are invited to join the pilgrimage, which honours youth from around the world.
