Spare teachers may strike

Members of the local secondary school occasional teachers’ bargaining unit this week voted 100 percent in favour of strike action.
A meeting with a conciliator is scheduled for tomorrow (Dec. 9).
The teachers have been working without a contract with the Rainy River District School Board since Aug. 31, 2004.
“I’m not surprised at the results of the strike vote,” said Ron Erb, president of the local bargaining unit. “The members are resolved to do whatever it takes to obtain a fair and equitable settlement.”
“For the past year, the occasional teachers have been patiently waiting for the bargaining process to deliver a fair settlement,” noted bargaining unit chair Paul Elliott, who also is an executive officer for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.
“Without an agreement in sight, that patience is wearing thin,” he warned.
