Some new fires erupt


No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region yesterday, but there were a total of four on Saturday, including one in Red Lake District, two in Sioux Lookout District, and one in Nipigon District.
Multiple fire starts in recent days challenged the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services personnel in the Northwest Region, but aggressive air and ground attack on the fires proved effective.
The current active fires include four in Red Lake District, 11 in Sioux Lookout District, and one in Nipigon District.
There have been 192 fires to date in the Northwest Region, burning 1,298.7 hectares.
Good progress is being reported on a complex of fires about 40-45 km north and northwest of Savant Lake.
A number of lightning-caused fires started in the same general area on June 6 and rapid response was sent from the Sioux Lookout Fire Management Headquarters.
FireRanger crews are committed to the fires.
The forest fire hazard currently is “low” across most of the region except in the eastern half of Nipigon District, where it is “moderate to high.”
