Snowmobile goes through the ice

A 66-year-old Fort Frances man escaped injury yesterday when the snowmachine he was operating went through the ice on Rainy Lake, the OPP reported late this morning.
Emo OPP said the man was returning from ice fishing in the area of the Ottertail River around 5 p.m. when the mishap occurred.
He was able to free himself from the 2006 Yamaha Venture without sustaining any injuries but, due to heavy fog, was unable to return to where his vehicle was parked on Old Station Road.
The man was able to use his cell phone and contact a family member for assistance.
The OPP’s Emergency Response Team, assisted by the K-9 unit and Koochiching County Sheriff’s office, conducted a search throughout the evening and into the early-morning hours.
During this time, the man was able to find his way to a cabin and notify his family and police of his whereabouts.
The OPP would like to remind the public that ice conditions may have deteriorated due to the recent mild temperatures.
People are urged to exercise extreme caution and check ice conditions prior to travelling across lakes and rivers.
