Ready to help make Fort Frances a winter wonderland?
Teams wanting to participate in the Rainy River Arts Collective’s inaugural snow sculpture competition can now pick up registration forms at the Fort Frances Museum, the Fort Frances Times, or online at www.rrarts.net
Slated for February, the competition is one of the first events being organized by the RRAC, which formed this past fall as a way to promote and support the arts throughout the district.
The RRAC is asking those wanting to participate to fill out a registration form, including sketches of their snow sculpture.
Sculpture carving will begin on Feb. 8 at various designated sites around Fort Frances. The teams can work on their sculpture on their own schedule up until Feb. 17 at midnight.
The theme for the sculptures is “The Arts”—in honour of the RRAC’s foundation year.
There are no limits to the number of individuals who may be on a team, although one person must be designated as the official “contact” and attend an initial meeting.
Teams will be working from a block of snow measuring a 8’x8’x8’.
Sculptors must provide their own sculpting tools (i.e., axes, hand saws, ice chisels, spray bottles, etc), although power tools are not allowed.
Snow and water is the only construction material allowed.
Judging of the snow sculptures will fall within the three categories:
•School Division (students and teachers from classrooms, school-related clubs and organizations, etc.);
•General Division (people of all ages from local community centres, youth groups, sports teams and organizations, church groups, auxiliaries, non-proft organizations, groups of friends, clubs, etc.); and
•Business Division (employees from a business).
A first-place prize of $100 will be awarded for each of the categories, along with a $50 second-place prize.
The unveiling and awards presentation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Fort Frances Museum.
Judges will be appointed by the RRAC.
There is an entry fee of $25 per team.
