The investigation into an apartment fire here earlier this month has concluded that smouldering smoking materials was to blame.
Fort Frances Fire Chief Gerry Armstrong said this morning the cause was filed as “believed to have been misuse of smoking material.”
“It is difficult to prove and there was no hard and fast evidence, if you will,” he noted. “But we did attribute it to that because all the evidence, if you will, that was there certainly led to that type of fire.
“The smouldering thing for a number of hours, the bedding material, those kinds of things,” Chief Armstrong explained.
As previously reported, the fire started in an apartment on the north side of the 1000 block of Scott Street around 8:30-9 p.m. back on Feb. 10.
Firefighters responded quickly and were able to keep most of the fire confined to one room, although the rest of apartment suffered heavy smoke and heat damage.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but a dog and two cats perished in the blaze.
