Small business programs, services available

Want to learn about funding programs and business services available in the district–and how to access them?
A small business service provider open house is slated for June 14, courtesy of the Rainy River Future Development Corp., PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise, and Northwest Business Centre.
The free event will run from 3-7 p.m. at Copper River Inn.
RRFDC business investment officer Angela Halvorsen noted all three partners service small businesses in Rainy River District.
They’re hoping that holding an open house is an efficient way to get those small businesses to come to one place, so they can find out about all of the services available and get the help they need.
Halvorsen added the open house is aimed at anyone thinking about starting up a business or expanding their existing one.
“I find lately that I have a lot of clients who have some sort of a hobby that they’re doing at home, and they may be charging a little bit here and there, but they want to take it from a hobby to a business,” she noted.
“This would be one place they could go to learn about what to do, how to do it, what programs are available to them, as well as what the steps are to take to get there.”
Anyone interested in finding out what grants and financing programs are available for small business in the area also will want to attend, as will business owners or managers who would like to find out about programs to hire staff.
Those thinking of selling their business also will be able to find out what programs are available.
Organizers are expecting upwards of 15 service providers to attend next Wednesday’s open house.
They’ll range from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, “which has a good program business start-up and expansion,” noted Halvorsen, to the Business Development Bank of Canada, “which is a good one for those looking at expanding their business.”
The Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund, meanwhile, specifically is for aboriginal entrepreneurs.
Others will include NCDS, Confederation College, the Seven Generations Education Institute, Northwest Training & Adjustment Board, RRFDC, PARO, Northwest Business Centre, and more.
