Skate park social not a huge hit

“Summer Bash 2006,” the Kiwanis skate park fundraiser social, was held Saturday at the local Legion. And although it proved less successful than hoped, organizers are looking on the bright side.
“We drew about 60 people. It still went well. We made some money [about $850],” skate park committee chair Rob Tovey said Monday.
“We would have liked to make more, but it’s just as important to remain active in the community,” he added.
“It was a little disappointing,” conceded Patsy Roy, who spearheaded organizing the social. “There was so much else going on—there were two weddings, the play in Devlin. There were people burnt out from the ‘Relay for Life.’
“We even went around to see what else was happening in town and it was dead,” she noted. “And, of course, there was the hockey game on.
“It still was a promotion, for us and for Domino’s. And those of us who were there, we had a ball. An absolute ball,” Roy added. “The band was excellent, the prizes were excellent.
“We made what we made.”
The age of majority social ran from 8 p.m.-1:30 a.m., and Tovey said he was surprised to see a fair share of the total attendance came out around midnight.
The fundraiser featured live music by The Poor Boys (consisting of Dave Ashworth, Craig Wood, and Dan Mihichuk), a Chinese auction, and food.
Newly-opened Domino’s Pizza was the social’s main sponsor, providing the band, food, the door prize, and some auction items.
Other auction items, including rods and reels, sweatshirts, hats, a portable heater, and a skateboard, were donated by about a dozen other local businesses.
In related news, Roy said the skate park committee will be organizing a teen dance, tentatively slated for Thursday, June 29 at the Memorial Sports Centre, as part of the Fun in the Sun activities.
Details are expected to be confirmed in the near future.
On the other hand, Roy said it looks like the Fort Frances Skate Board Open probably will be postponed until later this summer.
She added the fundraiser event, which was slated to be held on Sunday, July 2, was coming up too fast, and that the committee would rather have the event executed to its full potential rather than be rushed and not do so.
