Skate park fundraiser party goes tomorrow

Organizers are hoping a big crowd looking for a good time comes out Saturday night for “Summer Bash 2006,” a social being staged in support of the Kiwanis skate park.
The social (age of majority only) will run from 8 p.m.-1:30 a.m. at the local Legion, and feature live music by the “Poor Boys,” a silent auction featuring items donated by local businesses, door prizes, and free pizza and sides provided by Domino’s Pizza, skate park chair Rob Tovey noted Thursday.
“We’re hoping to have 120-150 people out,” he said. “We’ve been pre-selling tickets and putting out flyers all over town.
“It should be a lot of fun. The ‘Poor Boys’ are always a good draw,” added Tovey. “And teaming up with Domino’s has been great. It’s a good company in town and Dave Ashworth is a great guy.”
Ashworth, who owns and operates the newly-opened Domino’s Pizza with his wife, Terry, noted Domino’s participation in Saturday night’s fundraiser also is a grand opening celebration for the new business.
“We knew the skate park is one the fundraising causes out that’s trying to get the whole process [of paying for the park] completed,” said Ashworth. “We basically thought it was a good idea to team up with them.
“We weren’t interested in having a grand opening as a money-maker for ourselves. So we decided to send over the proceeds to a good, worthy cause,” he added.
Besides providing the food for the fundraiser, Domino’s also has donated some prizes and silent auction items.
“Domino’s is also providing the band,” said Ashworth, who plays in it. “I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can get some people out to support this great community event.”
Ashworth noted Domino’s was a major sponsor of the OFSAA hockey championship back in March even before they were open, and has been donating pizzas to other community events in recent weeks.
“We feel it’s very important, and Domino’s as well, to be involved in community partnering, and to be active in the community as far as sponsorship,” he said.
The skate park committee and Domino’s also will work together to feed up to 300 “Relay for Life” participants at tonight’s all-night fundraiser.
Admission to “Summer Bash 2006” is $7, with tickets available at Skates & Blades or by calling Patsy Roy at 274-4244.
Tickets also will be available at the door if there’s any still left.
All proceeds will go to the Kiwanis skate park.

Tovey also announced a skateboarding competition will be held Sunday, July 2 at the Kiwanis skate park.
Called the “Fun in the Sun” Fort Frances Skate Board Open, the fundraiser is open to any skateboarders from across the district.
The only requirement is that they raise at least $40 in pledges to pay the entry fee, which will go towards paying off the park.
There will be different divisions for skateboarders of varying age or skill so beginners are welcome. The competition will feature guest judges, and trophies will be awarded to the winners.
Tovey noted a teen dance, sponsored by the Kiwanis skate park, will be held on the evening of Saturday, July 1 at the Memorial Sports Centre.
More details about both these events, such as exact times, will be announced next week.
