Site confirmed for penny weigh-in

Gather those pennies! The Kenora-Rainy River branch of the Alzheimer Society will be holding its “Penny for your thoughts” weigh-in on Jan. 21-22 at Auto Parts International here.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, said the business (located on King’s Highway next North American Lumber) has volunteered to hold the weigh-in there next Friday and Saturday.
Schonewille noted everybody is welcome to drop by to have their pennies weighed—and then donated to the Alzheimer Society—between noon and 5 p.m. on Jan. 21 and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Jan. 22.
She added the pennies don’t have to rolled—they can be in bags, jars, or other containers.
Schonewille has challenged Fort Frances to bring in more pennies than Kenora residents did there last weekend—144 pounds (last year, Fort Frances donors brought in 146 pounds of pennies while Kenora turned in 273).
But she admitted it’s possible she’ll see a lesser amount this year since many people, particularly schoolchildren, have been saving their pennies to give to tsunami relief.
In related news, Schonewille confirmed a roast beef fundraiser supper will be held Saturday, Jan. 22 starting at 5 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Rainy River.
The cost to attend is $9 per person.
The dinner was held for the first time last year and attracted about 50 people. Including proceeds from a penny table, the evening netted $534 for the Alzheimer Society.
Meanwhile, Schonewille noted the Alzheimer Society is planning to hold a book sale fundraiser sometime in February, but it still is looking for a location.
Any business, church, or other group that would like to donate space for the Alzheimer Society to hold a book sale can contact Schonewille at 1-800-682-0245.
Anyone looking to donate books to the sale here can contact Cheryl McCallum at 275-5003. She’ll come to your home and pick them up.
A similar book sale in Kenora this past weekend brought in $1,700 for the Alzheimer Society.
