Sister Kennedy roof to be replaced

Staff

The roof of the Sister Kennedy Centre will be replaced after it started leaking in several spots throughout the building this spring.
Card tables have had to be moved to make room for pails to catch water.
There are a few places in the kitchen where pails also have had to be put in place.
The Community Services executive committee recommended the roof be replaced with architectural shingles that should last 35 years.
Council awarded the project to the lowest bid of three, Kyle Glowasky Contracting, at a cost of $22,176.27, with costs paid from reserve funds.
In other news, the Town of Fort Frances is helping pay for the cost of a legal opinion of a law firm in regard to Municipal Property Assessment Corp./Assessment Review Board decisions.
The town split the cost with the City of Dryden, Town of Espanola, City of Thunder Bay, Township of James (Elk Lake), and Township of Ear Falls, all of which committed to form a coalition prior to a meeting held in Toronto last month.
The town feels this alliance will be very important going forward with future appeals of property reassessment for mills in the participating communities.
Council approved payment in the amount of $1,312.14 (incl. HST), which is one-sixth of the cost for the legal opinion sought from Chandelle J. Bryson, Bust & Partners Barristers and Solicitors.
In related news, council approved Mayor Roy Avis to attend another meeting in mid-June with deputy finance minister Steve Orsini and William Forward, deputy minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, as well as the leaders of coalition municipalities.
