The Town of Fort Frances is continuing with emergency repairs following the discovery of a sinkhole late Saturday afternoon in the middle of the 200 block of Third Street East.
The town initially said the road would be re-opened today, but the closure now is expected to remain in effect until sometime tomorrow night.
“The sanitary sewer collection system on the east side of the break is still surcharged and still needs to be drawn down in order for the crew to complete the repair of the sanitary sewer pipe,” Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said in an e-mailed update late yesterday evening.
“Two pumps are scheduled to run all [Monday] night and hopefully by [this] morning there will be no surcharge of the sanitary sewer, thus allowing the crew to complete the needed repair,” he added.
It then will take two days to complete the repair and backfill the excavation, noted Brown, with everything “hopefully” back to normal sometime Wednesday night.
In the interim, access to the Portage Avenue underpass will be via the 300 block of Third Street East only.
