Seven seeking election as chief

It’s shaping up to be a crowded field for band elections at Couchiching First Nation next month as seven people are running for chief while 41 are vying for the six council seats up for grabs, including five of the incumbents.
Chief Chuck McPherson is seeking re-election for a third-straight term against challengers Diane Adams, Allan Douglas Bruyere, David Bruyere, Harry Morrisseau, Calvin Morrisseau, and Rudy Morrisseau.
David Bruyere currently is a councillor.
The five incumbents seeking reelection to band council for another two years are Brian Perrault, Lucille (Bugsy) Morrisseau, Carolyn Jourdain, Dan Mainville, and Richard (Dick) Bird.
Also running for council are Shane Jourdain, Fern Tookenay, Sam Bruyere, Jeff (Botto) Bruyere, Clint Perreault, Alex Bruyere, Ronald (Magoo) Archie, Allan Yerxa, Ed Yerxa, Connie (Peterson) Bruyere, Donna Mainville, Jackie Jourdain-Adams, Greg Bird, and Sandra Windego.
Harlan Morrisseau, Venus Bruyere, Shawn Jourdain, B. Blake Bruyere, Daniel A. Morrisseau, Blaine Perreault, Calvin Morrisseau, Brian Yerxa, Nicole Perreault, Rudy Morrisseau, William (Bill) Perreault, Chad Bruyere, Candace Morrisseau, and Chris (Gubby) McPherson.
Wallace (Dozer) Bruyere, Joanne Bruyere, Ida Linklater, Shirley I. Bruyere, Donald Bruyere, Eugene McPherson, Dennis Bruyere, and Wilma Yerxa-Bird.
Calvin Morrisseau and Rudy Morrisseau are running for both offices.
The deadline for withdrawing from the race was Jan. 13 so all the candidates’ names will appear on the ballot.
The election will take place Feb.
19.
