Think of Four Paws Pet Supply’s obedience training as a finishing school for dogs.
The six-week session, which begins tomorrow evening at the store, teaches basic obedience training to give owners more control over their pet.
“We give owners stuff that they can build on, so that they can then go out and teach their dogs other things like retrieving, “ said store owner Dawnn Taylor, who will be leading the classes.
“They’ll learn basic commands like sit, stay, come, and heel . . . manners, I guess,” Taylor said, adding “If you have company over you don’t want your dog jumping all over your company. They need just good living skills.”
But Taylor noted some dogs require more than just etiquette training.
“We try to address other type problems that dogs may have as well. Dogs that are jumpers, or dig holes, or dogs that are a little bit more dominant,” she said.
The classes are open to dogs who are three months old or older, at least “kindergarten age” Taylor said, and can even benefit older pooches who needs to brush up on their skills.
“I’ve had 12-year old dogs come to the classes. The old adage that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks isn’t true,” she said.
Four Paws offers two sessions every summer but are currently booked full.
