Just because you’re diabetic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy eating at Christmas time.
That’s the message the Valley Diabetes Education Centre will be promoting at a presentation Tuesday (Dec. 3) from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Day Program at La Verendrye Hospital.
“The whole emphasis is on making better choices, and watching portion sizes,” said registered nurse Cindy Gauthier, who will make the presentation along with clinical dietitian Rooksana Randeree of La Verendrye Hospital and dietitian Jodis McCaine of the Valley Diabetes Education Centre.
“We’re doing some baking, and will have some low-fat snacks for people to try,” Gauthier added. “And we’ll have the recipes we use collected for people so people can try them themselves.”
And to have a little fun, those who attend are encouraged to play a “Trivial Pursuit”-like game call “The Target Zone,” which tests people’s knowledge of diabetes.
“It’s something new we’re trying,” said Gauthier, adding a Christmas event like this last was held at the hospital two years ago.
Call 274-4828 to pre-register as seating at the day program is limited.
