Seniors gearing up for ‘Actifest’

What is Actifest?
Well, every second year, the champions from all the Ontario district senior games gather to compete for provincial honours in the various events, usually numbering 15 (including both indoor and outdoor games).
The year 2000 is an Actifest year, with the celebration scheduled to be held in August in Nepean, near Ottawa.
It seems quite a while off but a very great deal of preliminary activity precedes the championship games. Basically, this entails the district senior games held in late spring.
For us in the north, the hosting of the District 1A Senior Games is shared among Kenora, Dryden, and Fort Frances–and this year it’s Dryden’s turn.
The three centres are mutually supportive so Fort Frances seniors very shortly will be starting the advance planning for our 55+ year-olds’ participation.
Sister Kennedy Centre is the hub where most of the preliminary work is done. Each past senior games year has seen a substantial number of local folks joining in the fun–not all expecting to win (some go as much for the fellowship and sociability they find there).
Local conveners soon will be travelling to Kenora as part of the planning committee for this year’s District 1A Senior Games.
Meanwhile, winter activities now ongoing at the Sister Kennedy Centre include floor and table shuffleboard, and the regular carpet bowling, pool, and card games.
In the planning stages are tournaments–cribbage for Jan. 20, 500 for Jan. 31, and Smear for Feb. 15. All seniors are welcome.
Please sign up on posters at the centre if you wish to take part.
The regular meeting of Happy Times Club held last Wednesday (Jan. 12) featured the election of officers for the coming term. They included Nick Wihnan (president), Bethel Miller (first vice), Mary Clinker (second vice), Boris Katerick (treasurer), and Gordon Calder (secretary).
The club will hold its monthly potluck supper today (Jan. 19) starting at 5 p.m. Music and card games will follow.
