Seniors, and those getting ready to retire, are urged to attend an information forum here Tuesday to learn more about what benefits they are entitled to from the federal government.
Local MP Robert Nault is hosting the event, which will feature discussions on the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
It will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Volunteer Bureau (located in the old CN station), and a lunch will be served. Admission is free.
Similar forums are being held in Dryden on Monday and then Kenora on Wednesday.
Representatives from Human Resource Development Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. will be on hand to discuss programs available to retired residents.
For instance, the Guaranteed Income Supplement is a boost to Old Age Security to pull seniors out of poverty.
Many believe they are not eligible for this program if they have some RRSPs or other assets. Presentations will explain who is eligible for this program and how they can apply for it.
The forum coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Old Age Security program, which began in 1927.
