U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) wishes to inform the public that the inspection station at Grand Marais, Mn. will open for the summer tourist season May 15.
Effective May 15-Sept. 30, the hours of operation for the inspection station will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (CST) seven days a week.
The Grand Marais border station is located within the U.S. Coast Guard station in Grand Marais.
This border station serves individuals arriving from Canada via small boat by the Gunflint Trail area (there are no roads into or out of Canada in this remote wilderness area).
In addition, vessels arriving via Lake Superior at Grand Marias Harbor must call the Grand Marais station to report arrival and arrange for inspection.
The Grand Marais station also services the Cook County Airport and a seaplane base located on Devils Track Lake.
Meanwhile, the inspection station at Ely, Mn. will open for the summer tourist season May 28.
Effective May 28-Sept. 11, its hours of operation will be 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (CST) seven days a week.
The border station, located in the U.S. National Forest Service complex in Ely, serves individuals arriving from Canada via the Boundary Water Canoe Area (there are no roads into or out of Canada in this remote wilderness area).
All travel into and from Canada is by non-motorized small boat, canoe, kayak, and aircraft.
In related news, applications for the I-68 permit can be made in person at both the Grand Marais and Ely border stations during normal business hours.
The permit allows boaters to enter the U.S. from Canada for recreational purposes, and report their arrival to CBP from a telephone at the earliest opportunity.
