The local 144 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fort Frances spent the weekend of Feb. 10-12 participating in the Seamanship Inter-Divisional Competition in Thunder Bay.
Five units from Northwestern Ontario took part, including 42 RCSCC Vindictive and 309 RCSCC Fort William (from Thunder Bay), 217 RCSCC Onandaga (from Nipigon), and 302 RCSCC Endurance (from Terrace Bay).
With more than 60 cadets in attendance and multiple activities, they were not without something to do.
In previous years, the cadets from 144 travelled to Winnipeg to participate in this event. This year, however, they decided to go to Thunder Bay for a change.
The activities were knot-tying, splicing, whippings, block and tackle, coiling and heaving a line, sail boat ID, rifle ID, piping, gym, badminton, and volleyball.
The cadets were split up and put into teams of eight or nine with others from each unit.
Saturday was spent reviewing and learning the different activities. Then on Sunday, the cadets were scored on what they could accomplish as a team.
“The activities were challenging yet fun,” said Master Seaman Chelsea Barron.
The local Sea Cadets parade Mondays from 6:30-9:15 p.m. at the Emo curling rink, with the occasional weekend activity.
