As another school year comes to a close and students look forward to their summer break, some of their teachers will be going on a more permanent vacation.
At the fourth-annual Rainy River District School Board Employee Recognition Night here Friday night, 15 retirees were recognized for their years of service.
It also was a time to honour six teachers who had served the board for 25 years.
Trustee Ron McAlister was on hand to say a few words to honour both groups of teachers on behalf of the board. He compared them to foot soldiers in the army that teaches the board’s children.
“The teachers are on the point taking fire from all sides,” he remarked. “You have been the foot soldiers in this army. You are the unsung heroes.
“You have made a difference in the lives of our students,” he added. “Your medals are their achievements.”
“We wish you good health and loads of fun and happiness,” echoed Education Director Warren Hoshizaki in his speech to the retirees.
Each retiree on hand had a short presentation made about them by colleagues they had worked with, then had an opportunity to speak about their careers and retirement.
“I do love teaching and I still love it,” said retiree Larry Patrick, a teacher at J.W. Walker School. “It was a tough decision.
“It was time to move on to a new chapter in my life,” he added. “I’m going to miss the profession, but I’m not leaving completely.”
Patrick said he planned on doing some supply teaching, which should bring some comfort to the students and parents who will be sad to see “Mr. P.” go.
The 2002-03 crop of retirees included also included Kathleen DeGagne, Gary Gamsby, Allan Holt, Bill James, David Livicker, Helen Mose, Diane Oster, Pam Reid, Adriana Schulz, Jocelyn Stockwell, Jerry Stromness, Gerry Toop, Eleanor Wiersema, and Calvin Williamson.
Those honoured Friday night for serving the board for 25 years were Judy Carter, Alfred Cotterill, Ken Desrosiers, Mary Makarenko, David Ogilvie, and Richard Spilchuk.
