As the old Robert Moore School’s red bricks come tumbling down, a few pieces of the historic building will be staying safe.
Specifically, the dated bricks that have sat along the top edge of the school.
These stones currently are in storage while the rest of the school is being demolished, noted Raymond Roy, manager of plant and operations for the Rainy River District School Board.
“Part of our campus plan is to incorporate these bricks into some kind of monument,” he explained.
This monument probably will be located closer to the new school, although Roy said no plans have been finalized about what it will look like.
“We’ll try and incorporate them [the date bricks] into something so there’s at least a piece of the old school there forever,” he remarked.
Demolition of the old school began last Friday, with onlookers gathering along the streets to watch backhoes knock the eastern section into dust and rubble.
Roy said the estimated completion date for the demolition is Aug. 29—before children return to school.
This completion date, however, doesn’t include clean-up of the debris from the site.
