Press Release
The Rainy River District School Board is reviewing its policies in preparation for the passing of Bill 177 (the Student Achievement and School Board Governance Act).
The board understands second and third reading will occur in the fall.
It has received information regarding the regulation and recognizes the constant change of education governance and practice requires new approaches with respect to the policies presently in place.
Bill 177 redefines the role of the directors and trustees, and builds in accountability measures.
Trustees, directors, and other stakeholders had opportunities for input into the bill.
The local board has begun discussion in its committee meetings in order to prepare for the changes to policies that pertain to Regulation 177. These changes have begun and will flow through the normal channels of policy review.
The work will continue over the summer months to ready the board for the Ministry of Education expectations pertaining to student achievement and school board governance.
The ministry also has created the Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace—a consortium that has been established to facilitate group purchasing and introduce an integrated electronic marketplace.
This, too, will impact on the practices in boards and may require adjustments to policies.
Policy governance is taking yet another change for boards of education and the Rainy River District School Board is preparing for these changes.
Trustees and senior administration see these changes as essential to providing the flexibility required to function in the fast-paced world of education.
