Following a fundraising yard sale here last Saturday, it appears the Salvation Army youth group is almost halfway to going on a trip to Spirit Fest in Detroit Lakes, Mn. next week.
“It went very well,” Heather Keeler, a local youth outreach worker, said yesterday of the yard sale. “We raised over $300, which pays for five of 12 people to go.”
Not stopping there, a soup-and-sandwich dinner is planned for this Friday evening at St. Mary’s Church in hopes of getting more donations so all 12 local youths can attend Spirit Fest, an annual three-day Christian music concert.
“There’s going to be entertainment, some drama, some comedy, and music, as well as some testimonials from youths,” noted Keeler. “They’ll be talking about what we do, and what the program has done for them.”
There also will be draws for door prizes.
Keeler added that while the meal is free, people will be encouraged to give a donation.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., with supper served at 6:30. The sandwiches have been donated by the Catholic Women’s League.
Those interested in attending also are urged to pick up tickets in advance at the Salvation Army Citadel on Victoria Avenue so organizers have a better idea of how many people will attend.
Looking ahead this summer, the youth outreach group will be holding a “theme” day camp for children aged seven to 12 on Aug. 13-17. The group also holds weekly youth meetings, which anyone is welcome to attend.
