The local Salvation Army recently sent out its annual “Lent Campaign” letter to district residents and businesses.
Capt. Angel Sandoval is asking those who receive the letters to open them, read them, and give serious thought to donating $35, $70, $100, or more through Lent Campaign 2012 to support local families.
Capt. Sandoval said Monday there has been a high increase in the number of families knocking at the Salvation Army’s door asking for support, especially single parents with several children.
For example, in January, 2011, the Salvation Army spent $1,500 buying food to feed those in need.
This past January, that amount tripled to $4,500.
In February, 2011, they spent $2,000. Last month, however, that figure was more than $3,200.
“Just in our district, there’s 1,200 families in poverty right now,” stressed Capt. Sandoval.
“They lack money, food, [and] the basics of living to nurture themselves and their families, as well.
“The Salvation Army depends 100 percent on the support of the community to fulfill our commitment to those in need,” he noted.
Capt. Sandoval said individuals and businesses are urged to give whatever they can afford, adding the need is urgent.
“Financial support will help us alleviate the burden carried by the families,” he remarked.
Having more money at a given time allows the Salvation Army to buy bulk and make the dollars go farther.
Capt. Marlene Sandoval said it can be “heartbreaking” for the Salvation Army when people in need come to them when the food bank shelves start to go bare.
“People believe we are here to help them,” she reasoned. “It’s hard to say, ‘Sorry, we don’t have that.’”
People also can donate non-perishable food items to the food bank.
Items in high demand include soup, canned meat, pasta sauce, cereal, peanut butter, sides (i.e., instant potatoes, Sidekicks, etc.), juice, and canned fruit.
The public is encouraged to mail in a donation or drop by the Citadel on Victoria Avenue (across from the clinic).
“We’ll be glad to see them,” said Capt. Angel Sandoval.
“And thank them at the same time,” his wife added.
In related news, the Salvation Army will host a Palm Sunday luncheon this Sunday (April 1) at 11 a.m. at the Citadel.
The event include a short service, followed by a free lunch.
