Safeway to announce new charity next week

With the deadline for suggestions being this coming Friday, Canada Safeway staff likely will pick their charity for 2002 sometime next week.
“The response has been pretty good,” manager Mike Scott said this morning.
“We got about 10 letters from various organizations. But as we know from last year, it’s usually only just before the deadline that people really start writing those letters,” he added.
Scott noted people with suggestions as to who Canada Safeway should pick as its annual charity can be dropped off at the customer service desk.
“Then, over the weekend, staff will get together and take a closer look at the submissions. By early next week, we should have made our decision,” he said.
While Scott wouldn’t say which charities have been suggested so far, he said there’s been “some good ideas.”
“The nice thing to see is organizations from Dryden and Thunder Bay wanting to be our charity because they know our reputation. Of course, we’ll try to pick someone local,” he remarked, adding some of the charities considered in past years once again have tried to land the store’s support.
The local Safeway previously has adopted the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, Friends of the Library, and most recently Friends of Animals.
The store came third in its region for this year’s fundraising campaign, which brought in about $32,000 to help build an animal shelter here.
The Dryden store, which is now run by former local assistant manager Dale Fortes, raised the most–$42,000–for its charity, while the Kenora store came second ($34,000).
