Press Release
Canada’s largest forestry union welcomes this week’s announcement that AbitibiBowater creditors have approved the company’s restructuring plan, paving its way out of bankruptcy protection this fall.
Communications, Energy and Paperworkers president Dave Coles stressed, however, that the sacrifices made by workers to put the company on a secure financial footing will not soon be forgotten.
“Workers have done more than their fair share to save this company, in marked contrast to our federal government which did nothing to come to the aid of ailing forest communities,” he charged.
“We will remember the Harper government’s inaction at election time,” Coles vowed.
The restructuring plan now goes to Quebec Superior Court for approval Sept. 20.
