Rug hooking class to start in September

A rug hooking class for beginners will be held at the Fine Line Art Gallery here beginning in September.
Debbie Logan, advertising manager at the Fort Frances Times and instructor for the class, said the response has been very good so far.
“I’ve got too many for one class,” Logan said, adding 20 people have contacted her.
Some of the people who expressed an interest already have a basic knowledge of rug hooking, or are in the middle of a project, so Logan decided to create an intermediate class for them.
“We’ll have the intermediate class after the beginners. That way if the beginners want to continue, they can go to the intermediate class,” she noted.
Logan said the idea to hold a rug hooking class came from local artist Donna Cannon, who saw Logan’s works at the “Wild ’n Wooly” art show at the gallery back in April and asked if she could teach her.
Others expressed an interest, too, so Logan decided to organize a formal class. The gallery agreed to provide the space.
So far, Logan has 10 people confirmed for the beginner’s class. “People are wildly enthusiastic to start,” she remarked.
Logan said she learned to hook when she was 12 or 13 years old, when she spent the summer with her grandmother. “I love it, but I grew up with it,” she noted.
The beginner’s class will teach students not only basic hooking techniques, like how to hold the hook and how to pull the wool through the burlap, but the whole process starting from square one.
“They’re going to learn to cut the wool and organize it,” Logan said, as well as shading techniques.
One step beginners won’t have to do themselves is dyeing the wool. Logan will do that herself.
She also has to order all the supplies from Maine, so the deadline for registering for the class and getting cheques in is next Friday (Aug. 29).
The cost of the workshop is $65. The cost of materials depends on the pattern chosen (the rose spray pattern costs $45, for instance, while the fruit pattern costs $50).
A hook costs an additional $10 and a frame $15.
The beginner’s class will take place Wednesdays from 6:30-10 p.m. beginning Sept. 10. The class will run for four weeks.
Anyone interested in signing up should contact Logan at 274-5373 during the day and 274-3520 in the evenings.
