Rainy River High School will be receiving the Rainy River District School Board’s monthly Recognition of Excellence for indigenous education at its meeting there tonight.
RRHS principal Jim Chorney said the school incorporates indigenous culture in daily school routines and lessons.
“Students and staff contribute to a positive school climate by making cultural awareness an important aspect of being a student at RRHS,” he noted in a report to the board.
“Students have taken active roles in making hand drums, sewing bags, participating in the birthing ceremony of the drums, helping with the organization of feasts, designing cultural art mosaics for the courtyard, smudging for student wellness, planning and participating in student leadership meetings, and providing student voice to cultural events such as graduation and Indigenous Education Week,” he added.
As part of the school board’s annual operational plan, schools work to expand the understanding and use of indigenous curriculum materials and resources in classrooms, across all subject areas.
Also at tonight’s meeting, trustees will:
•hear a presentation about the 2015-16 EQAO results;
•receive the Parent Involvement Committee 2015-16 annual report; and
•look to approve and rescind several policies.
The public portion of the meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at RRHS.
