Stories, photos, and memories of Robert Moore School still are being sought by those organizing a July celebration for the almost century-old school that soon will be closing its doors for good.
While they’ve gathered a couple of dozen stories so far, they will be able to take up to 100, noted Robert Moore teacher Cynthia Donald, a former student herself who is spearheading efforts to organize the celebration.
“I am getting a handful of people each time, but we are now down to the crunch,” she stressed.
Organizers are looking to hold the celebration on the first weekend in July to tie into the annual Fun in the Sun events.
“Hopefully people who are home visiting will come out and visit,” explained Donald.
“We are planning a picture gallery in the gym and tours of the building,” she added.
This is the last year the current Robert Moore School will be open. Students from both it and F.H. Huffman School will be relocated to the new facility being built behind the current school in the fall.
The celebration aims to recognize and celebrate the decades of the school’s history, as well as the thousands of students and staff who have passed through its doors.
“I will take the stories by phone and I have a student working with me, Casey Kerber, who also went to Robert Moore,” Donald noted.
“I would like [them] from as many decades as possible. It can be just memories or recollections,” she remarked.
For example, one of the stories Donald has collected so far comes from Gary Wager who now resides in New Brunswick.
Wager e-mailed a story about an open house held at Robert Moore School back in 1996, where he can remember “surfing the net” for the first time with Mr. Daley and his mother.
Hopefully, with the public school board’s involvement, there will be more submissions to come, Donald said.
As well, Donald has been working to gather stories from current Robert Moore students in hopes of creating a yearbook with all of the classes.
As part of the celebration, Donald said T-shirts will be for sale, as well as commemorative mugs and key chains by Vi Plumridge, which are available at Betty’s on Scott Street.
Those who would like to share their photos or stories of Robert Moore School are asked to contact Donald at the school (274-9818).
For those interested in helping to organize the July celebration, the next planning meeting is slated for next Wednesday (March 24) at 7 p.m. at Robert Moore.
