The annual “Drive-Thru Breakfast,” hosted by the local Voyageur Lions Club, has been postponed due to the ongoing reconstruction of King’s Highway.
The fundraiser had been scheduled to be held next Thursday (Sept. 24) from 6-9 a.m. in the parking lot at Tim Hortons, but now will take place in mid-October.
Lion Gaby Hanzuk said the decision to postpone was made yesterday afternoon when the club, Tim Hortons, and the town agreed the current status of the traffic flow, which includes a temporary entrance off Elm Avenue, is not safe to hold the event.
“We are going to postpone the drive-thru breakfast,” she said.
“But we do plan to have it as soon as the town clears it.
“Right now, the town doesn’t really want us to have it,” Hanzuk reiterated. “Once we get the go-ahead from Tim Hortons and the town that it would be safe to do, then we will go forward.
“We’re hoping by the middle of October that it’s going to be a safe place,” she said.
“We’ll give people lots of notice.”
When the new date is set, the club will be offering 200 bonus breakfast bags, along with coffee and a muffin, for a minimum donation of $10.
All muffins and coffee are donated by Tim Hortons, said Hanzuk, adding more than 20 local businesses have donated gift certificates and prizes.
“You give us $10 and not only do you get the muffin and the coffee, but in the bag there’s well over $10 worth of coupons and items,” she explained.
“Everything from bottled water, fruit, fruit juices, granola bars, gift certificates from all over, pens, ear plugs, toothbrushes—you’re looking at the bag being probably worth, on its own, $20,” Hanzuk remarked.
Some bags also contain tickets for bigger prizes.
These range from a backpack loaded with school supplies from Lowery’s Northland Basics to a pass from Kitchen Creek Golf Course for two people to play 18 holes of golf.
A minimum donation of $10 is suggested for each bag, although people are welcome to donate more if they wish.
This will be the 12th year for the “Drive-Thru Breakfast.”
