The new $5.5-million double-rink ice surface here may have to be re-tendered after the town found out the company awarded the tender, Windfield Construction of Winnipeg, isn’t yet bondable for the project.
And if it that happens, the Oct. 1 completion date could be pushed back.
Mayor Glenn Witherspoon admitted yesterday the town didn’t find out the company wasn’t bondable for the arena project until after the tender was awarded.
He added out of fairness to the company, he didn’t want to say too much.
Windfield Construction could not be reached for comment.
But Mayor Witherspoon added the town was giving the company time to come up with the bond for the project. Town reps are slated to meet with Windfield on Jan. 6 to find out whether it was successful or not.
If it can’t get the bond, the mayor said the arena project might have to be re-tendered, or re-issued from the tenders already received.
Another option would be for the town to take the bond but Mayor Witherspoon admitted the whole issue would have to go to council if Windfield couldn’t get it.
“We’re going to have to cross that bridge when we get there,” he stressed.
The new “L-shaped” arena, earmarked to be built adjacent to the Sportsplex, will feature one North American-sized rink and an Olympic-sized one.
Memorial Arena will be demolished to make room for it.
