The Rainy Lake Ringers are getting ready for the 2010-11 season, and will be holding their first practice this Saturday (Sept. 18).
Director Diane Maxey is encouraging youths (age 12 and up) and adults to come out to St. John’s Anglican Church at 10:30 a.m., have a listen to the hand bell choir, and consider learning how to play.
Maxey said she has a core group of eight or nine ringers returning this fall, but would like to expand the group.
Having more members makes it easier for some ringers to be away and still have enough of them to stage performances, she reasoned, adding that it’s okay if a person only wants to be a spare ringer.
As well, those intimidated by starting out with hand bells can learn with hand chimes, added Maxey, noting they can partner with others to make learning easier.
Maxey conceded a knowledge of music is a plus, but really all you need to play the bells or hand chimes is rhythm.
Music books are provided.
Maxey’s goal is to get the new members in shape to play along with the core group before Christmas, when they will be playing for the public.
