‘Ride for Memories’ slated next month

Registration forms are now out for the fifth-annual “Ride for Memories,” which will see motorcyclists raise money for the local Alzheimer Society on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Not only are the forms available at local businesses—including the Super 8, The Place, La Place Rendez-Vous, and the Adventure Inn—but also at the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society Fall Fair this weekend.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the Alzheimer Society for the Kenora/Rainy River districts, will be on hand in the Farm Progress Building tomorrow and Saturday to answer any questions people may have.
“The response has been good so far,” she noted, citing some people have picked up pledge forms already, but most won’t be returned until the morning of the ride.
“We had 150 riders last year, so we’re looking for the event to be bigger and better this year,” she added.
In addition to the $15 registration fee ($20 after Aug. 27), riders are encouraged to collect pledges to raise money for the cause.
There are four starting location for participants across the region—Kenora, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, and Fort Frances. Local riders will leave from town at 8 a.m., taking highway 502 to Dryden where they will meet up with other riders for lunch.
The group will then head down Highway17 and 622 to Atikokan and then back to the Adventure Inn for a steak dinner.
A number of big prizes will be up for grabs for participants who collect the most pledges, as well as for the best poker hand.
There will also be a Chinese auction and commemorative T-shirts available to purchase.
“We’re encouraging people to ask their employer to match their pledges so we can see some high amounts,” Schonewille voiced, citing $32,000 was raised during the 2006 ride.
If anyone misses Schonewille at the fair and has any questions regarding registration forms or pledging a rider, they can contact her at 1-800-682-0245.
