Motorcycle enthusiasts have one full month to collect pledges for this year’s “Ride for Memories” and poker derby.
The fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of Kenora/Rainy River Districts is set to go Saturday, Aug. 27
Now in its 14th year, the ride and subsequent dinner will help raise awareness and funds to support people with dementia while giving local riders the chance to tour a good part of the region.
“The ‘Ride for Memories’ is our biggest fundraiser,” said Mack Hall, marketing and events co-ordinator for the local Alzheimer Society.
The ride will have start locations in Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden, and Red Lake. Local riders are asked to check in at The Harbourage here starting at 8:30 a.m., with departure time set for 9:30.
Local riders then will meet up with the others at the Dryden Legion for lunch ($15), where Dryden Mayor Greg Wilson will greet them.
Riders then will depart to Atikokan via Highway 622 before coming to Fort Frances to wrap up the event with a steak dinner at 7 p.m. at the Copper River Inn.
Prizes will be awarded to the top pledge earners and those with the best poker hands.
There also may be a raffle and silent auction.
The cost to register is $25 (dinner ticket included). Additional dinner tickets cost $25 each.
“It’s a pretty good deal—$25 for a steak dinner is pretty cheap for most places,” noted Hall, who added the dinner is a fun time.
“Last year was my first one and it was pretty wild,” he recalled.
Riders are encouraged to collect pledges before Aug. 27.
If they so choose, riders can order a special “Ride for Memories” T-shirt for an extra $15.
“The T-shirts are a new design this year—they’re pretty slick,” said Hall.
