Residents urged to scoop up after their dogs

The dog piles are getting out of hand along the riverfront walkway and through Pither’s Point Park, so the Town of Fort Frances is reminding pet owners the bylaw states they must clean up after their four-legged friends.
Recently, an influx of calls from residents complaining about the increasing amount of dog feces along the walkway has been bogging down bylaw officials, noted local animal control and bylaw officer Arlene Byrnes.
“For the most part, local residents are very helpful in this regard, however, for some reason the riverfront area has become a problem,” she remarked.
There also have been several complaints from residents who live in the areas about dogs running loose, added Byrnes.
“I’d like to also remind people that pets are to be leashed when walking along the riverfront and at Pither’s Point,” she said.
So bad is the problem that the town has begun a month-long blitz of friendly advertisements to remind the public of their responsibilities.
In related news, dog licences also are now available for your pets at the Civic Centre. According to municipal bylaw 12-79, licences are required for all dogs that reside in Fort Frances.
Licences are required for dogs over six months of age, and are as follows:
•Annual tags for dogs that have been spayed or neutered: $21; and
•Annual tags for dogs that are unspayed or non-neutered: $31.
