The “New Roadway” isn’t much of a street name.
That’s the name currently being used for a new street on maps and engineering schematics for the new Canada Customs and Immigration facility being built here. But town council is challenging Fort Frances residents to rename it.
“We’re just asking for public input for a relevant or appropriate road name,” said CAO Bill Naturkach.
The north-south road, which will run for one block between Church Street and Nelson Street just south of Portage Avenue, is being built to accommodate traffic leaving the new customs facility.
Residents have until Jan. 16 to submit their suggestions, along with a reason or short story in support of the name.
“The intent is that once we get the applications, I will then bring them to council without the names of the people who sent them,” Naturkach said. “Hopefully we’ll get enough to select from.”
Because most north-south roads in town are avenues, the new name must be an avenue and the name should not include any numbers. For ease of 911 calls, names which sound similar to other street/avenue names in town also should be avoided.
Submissions should be placed in sealed envelopes, including the entrant’s name, address, and phone number, before 2 p.m. on Jan. 16.
The winner will receive a token of appreciation from the mayor and council.
School students especially are being encouraged to enter the contest.
“We’re also asking students to enter because they’re the ones who are going to live with it beyond you and I,” noted Naturkach.
