Town council will receive a written request tonight from a local resident who wants to see a sun shelter built at the park on Colonization Road West and Biddeson Avenue.
“As someone that lives near this park, I enjoy taking my young daughter there often,” Lindsey Oster wrote in a letter to council.
“This park is well-maintained, has great equipment, and a wonderful large green space for kids to run and play,” she noted.
“[But] one thing that could improve this park is some type of sun shelter. There are no trees big enough to provide shade and, therefore, no reprieve from the sun on hot afternoons.
“There are many families and local day care providers in this area who make use of this park,” added Oster.
“Considering sun safety and the fact that some of the park users have very young infants and toddlers, it would be nice to have a place to get out of the sun for a while or perhaps have a picnic.”
Tonight’s council meeting is scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m. Prior to then, the committee of the whole will meet in-camera from 5:30-6:20 p.m.
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a Recreation Infrastructure Canada program application for Sunny Cove Camp upgrades;
•an RFP for food service at the Memorial Sports Centre;
•the issuance of a certificate of final acceptance and assumption of works re: an assigned subdivision agreement at 1022 Patcin Ave.;
•a request from the Ontario Realty Corp. regarding parking at 333 Church St.;
•tender no. 06-OF-10-rental rates for equipment and vehicles;
•a report on the retaining wall structure at Pither’s Point Park;
•a report on Sun Life and Maritime Life benefit renewals;
•a recommendation re: the “chem-free” grad party;

•a report on the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Strategic Direction and Fire Master Plan;
•a verbal update from Operation and Facilities manager Doug Brown on local projects;
•a report regarding the interim appointment of a deputy mayor;
•a break-open ticket licence application from Rainycrest Auxiliary at the 364 Foodstore from June 1-Nov. 30, 2009;
•a request from Marie and Lynwood Anderson regarding keeping deer fencing in front of their 920 Sixth St. E. home;
•a request from Marie and Lynwood Anderson regarding the possibility of leasing a lot behind their home on 920 Sixth St. E.;
•a request from the City of Cornwall and Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls for support of their resolutions asking the provincial government to abandon its plans for the harmonized sales tax (HST) and consult with taxpayers through a referendum or by campaigning on a platform of raising taxes before introducing any tax increase;
•a bylaw to authorize amendments to a joint use agreement with the Rainy River District School Board and Confederation College to provide for the operation and maintenance of an auditorium facility as part of a multi-use facility;
•a bylaw to amend Bylaw 47/07 to authorize the delivery of marriage solemnization services through the office of the clerk (this will permit civil marriages after hours and on weekends);
•a bylaw to authorize a licence agreement for the purposes of utilization of the town’s geospatial data with Union Gas Ltd.;
•a bylaw to authorize entering into a renewal agreement with Corey and Natalie Cousineau and Andrew and Laureen Peters in partnership with Outlast Laser Sports with respect to use of certain town lands;
•a bylaw to assume aboveground and underground municipal services fronting 1022 Patcin Ave. being part of a street on Plan 48M-368, and to assume certain lands and establish highways;
•a bylaw to approve a contract with Tom Jones Corp. for certain components of Heritage Tourism Project (Phase II); and
•a bylaw to authorize a licence agreement purposes of utilization of the town’s geospatial data with the Rainy River District OPP.
