With the local “Relay for Life” getting underway this Friday at Fort Frances High School, people are encouraged to purchase a luminary in honour or in memory of loved ones who have been affected by cancer.
Luminary chair Christine Denby explained luminaries are candles placed in fire-retardant paper bags, weighted with sand, which line the “Relay” track.
They are available for purchase for $5 at Pharmasave/Clinic Dispensary Fort Frances, Fort Frances Times, Energy Fitness, Gillons’ Insurance Brokers, RBC Fort Frances, the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, and Emo Drugs.
“They can take the bag home and decorate it,” noted Denby, adding those who do not wish to decorate their own bag simply can fill out the form and they’ll do the decorating.
Luminaries also will be available on-site from 5-10 p.m.
The Luminary ceremony, “A Walk To Remember,” will take place at 10 p.m.
“It is one of the most memorable moments of the ‘Relay,’” Denby stressed.
Luminaries on the bleachers spell the word “HOPE” and then later it changes to “CURE.”
Denby said the luminaries on the bleachers this year will be specifically-designated, and have been sponsored by Manitou Forest Products.
The luminaries stay lit throughout the night, providing light and inspiration to the participants.
The “Relay for Life” is the signature fundraising event of the Canadian Cancer Society, with 20 teams planning to walk or run around the track behind Fort High all night.
The public is invited to the opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m., followed by the “Survivors Lap.”
People are encouraged to come out and show their support.
