‘Relay for Life’ gaining momentum

The Canadian Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” is gathering momentum here with its new official sponsor and more than 300 participants already signed up.
“It’s going very good. The response from the community has been great,” enthused relay co-ordinator Suzanne Danku.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #29 Ladies Auxiliary has donated $8,000 to become the event sponsor although other donations also are being sought.
“We’re always looking for donations and anything for prizes,” said event chair Russ Ling.
Organizers hosted their first team captain rally as they drum up excitement for the June 22-23 walk-a-thon at Pither’s Point to raise money for the fight against cancer.
“It’s a family event, and all the money raised goes to the Cancer Society and some of it is staying local,” noted Danku.
For the fundraiser, teams of 12 will spend 12 hours–from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.–doing the non-competitive relay.
The teams will take turns running, strolling, and walking around VanJura Stadium to raise money for cancer research and community services for people living with cancer as well as their friends and family.
To date, 29 teams have signed on, with as many as 40 expected.
“We’re going to have entertainment all night,” noted Ling. “We’re going to have about six bands that will be down there, and we’re going to have softball and volleyball and all kinds of things like that.”
Anyone interested in participating can call Melissa Kawulia at 274-2570, and anyone who can volunteer should call Mike Allison at 274-4023.
