Organizers of the fifth-annual Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival have partnered with the “Relay for Life” to hold their events together on Saturday, June 25 at the Sorting Gap Marina in Fort Frances.
“Boundary Waters could not be happier with the partnership,” said festival organizer, foundation secretary, and team coach Annely Armstrong-Thorstad.
“We are very excited to share our resources in order to bring a larger and even more fun-filled day to the Borderland,” she added.
“This partnership just makes sense as both organizations’ mission is to make a charitable difference to families and individuals in our communities while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
“What a great day of family fun to kick off ‘Peaceful Border Days,’” she noted.
The “Relay for Life” also feels these changes will benefit the whole community.
“By combining the events, people no longer have to choose which event they would like to attend,” reasoned Samantha Manty, director of the Riverside Foundation for Health Care and a “Relay” committee member.
“They can have the best of both worlds,” she enthused.
“We would love to see some fresh businesses and community members out and
supporting these great events,” Manty added.
This is the final year the Riverside Foundation has in its partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society.
This relationship has been significant as it has ensured that dollars raised at the event come back for cancer care here in Rainy River District.
“With all the exciting possibilities that come with the change in venue, we hope to make this one of the most memorable ‘Relays’ yet,” Manty said.
Anyone interested in participating in this year’s “Relay for Life” is encouraged to register early.
Early registration is $10 per person, with fees going up to $15 after March 6.
Teams of any size can sign up. Individuals without teams also are welcome.
Organizers hope to make this “Relay” really count, and have a place for anyone who is interested in walking for a cure.

Meanwhile, teams for the annual Dragon Boat Festival, as well as individuals interested in paddling with the club for the season, are encouraged to sign up now on its website.
No experience is necessary, and everyone aged 14 and up is encouraged to come out.
Vendors, crafters, and groups wishing to raise money for their individual charities or provide activities for children also are invited once again to set up at the June event free of charge.

The “Relay for Life” also is gearing up for a kick-off event, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 27 on Scott Street.
The event will feature fun activities for the whole family, and members from both groups will be on hand to answer questions and take registrations.
