The Ministry of Natural Resources advises that the Red Lake water system is at its highest level in more than 30 years. These record water levels could lead to shoreline property damage.
Residents and property owners should monitor weather forecasts and secure their structures on or near the shoreline. Sections of the Red Lake shoreline are underwater and particularly susceptible to erosion. Boaters should watch out for floating debris and slow down near the shore to minimize their wakes.
Due to this summer’s heavy rainfall, more water is entering the water system than can be released by the control dam at Snowshoe Rapids. More rainfall will immediately affect water levels.
Water levels on Red, Keg, Gullrock, Ranger and Two Island Lakes are regulated by the control dam at Snowshoe Rapids on the Chukuni River, at the outlet of the Red Lake system. The dam has been passing water at peak capacity since May 11, 2009.
MNR is monitoring conditions and will continue to keep residents advised of any changes.
