Now that heavy rains have been replaced by hot, sunny weather, the water level of Rainy Lake is plummeting towards normal for this time of year.
Rainy Lake dropped by 2.1 cm (0.83 inches) Monday night to sit at 338.05 m (1,109.09 ft.)–a drop of 31 cm (12 inches) since the lake peaked June 6.
Rainy Lake is still 32.1 cm (12.6 inches) above the International Joint Commission’s maximum rule curve for this time of year.
Namakan Lake also is dropping rapidly, prompting Boise Cascade to partially close three gates on the Kettle Falls dam to slow the lake’s outflow.
Seven gates remain open, with the water level at 340.815 cm (1,118.16 inches) on Tuesday.
Rainy River below the dam dropped by four cm (1.6 inches) on Monday to sit at 331.18 m (1,086.55 ft.)
