The director of education for the Rainy River District School Board said trustee representation for the November election has been firmed up–and nothing much has changed.
“Rainy River will get one, Atikokan will get one, Fort Frances will get two, Emo will get one, and Devlin/La Vallee will get one,” Warren Hoshizaki noted Tuesday.
“Plus, of course, the one First Nations representative,” he added.
Hoshizaki, who sent the recommendations to the Ministry of Education on July 31, said that while the process may have been a ministry-dictated formality, it potentially could have meant more trustee positions added to the existing seven.
“Some of the boards around us, such as the [Keewatin-Patricia District School Board] increased in the number of trustees,” he said. “However, our area didn’t have the necessary student sparsity to warrant it.
“We have more central blocks of students.”
Hoshizaki also said such communication with municipalities would become more common in the future.
“We want to be more efficient in working with municipalities. Possibly, during the elections, we may look at sharing polling stations to split costs,” he noted.
Trustee elections will run in conjunction with municipal elections in November.
Current trustees include Judy Eluik (Atikokan), Dean McLean (Devlin/La Vallee), Dan Belluz and Gordon McBride (Fort Frances), Dennis Brunn (Rainy River), Frank Sheppard (Emo/Chapple/Nestor Falls), and Chief Jim Leonard (Rainy River First Nation).
In related news, Hoshizaki said trustee dispersal will be determined completely by the board by 2003.
