The public is invited out to the annual general meeting for the Rainy Lake Conservancy, slated for 2 p.m. this Sunday (Aug. 8) at La Place Rendez-Vous.
“We would love to have local people come, they’re honestly truly welcome,” said conservancy member and communications director, Mary Lysne, about the afternoon where both members and non-members are invited to come out and get acquainted with others who are interested in both land conservation and caring for the watershed.
As in past years, the AGM will feature a guest speaker, noted Lysne, with this year’s speaker being Dr. Brian McLaren, an assistant professor and chair of graduate studies in wildlife management at Lakehead University.
Dr. McLaren is currently supervising two post graduate students conducting research on Lake Sturgeon on Rainy Lake and the Namakan River.
The RLC has actually helped contribute to this research through purchasing an underwater camera, noted Lysne, to help better understand the breeding habits and juvenile habits of lake sturgeon in the region.
A small portion of the afternoon will also be for the business meeting and the election of directors, with voting limited to those who are members of the RLC as of July 31, 2010.
A membership table will also be set up to renew or become a member of the conservancy.
Hours d’ouevres and beverages will be provided following the meeting.
2010 marks the Rainy Lake Conservancy’s 11th year.
