Summer vacation ends Tuesday night for the Rainy River District School Board as it meets for its first regular monthly meeting of the new school year.
“I’m looking forward to going back and making decisions,” board chair Gord McBride said Monday. “It’s going to be another good school year.”
Topping tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at Robert Moore School, will be an update from the J.W. Walker Building Committee on plans for the expansion of that school.
The building committee has met over the summer to discuss concerns such as increased traffic in the area, where students should go during the construction phase, and the best use of space.
The board also will hear reports on maintenance projects performed at each of the schools over the summer as well as a review of this year’s summer school program.
McBride said he’s been impressed by how teachers have spent the summer getting ready for school, which resumes Wednesday morning.
“The commitment of teachers to their job and to the students is great,” he said, adding that a week ago he tried to contact one teacher he knew who already was at the school preparing for the coming year.
Many local teachers attended the annual Summer Institute and learned ways to integrate reading and writing skills into other subjects like math or science.
A report from the special education advisory committee, and tenders for office supplies for the upcoming school year, also will be discussed at tonight’s meeting.
