Public board kept busy fixing up schools

While students and teachers may have enjoyed a restful summer, the Rainy River District School Board had maintenance staff hard at work at district schools, according to a report from Raymond Roy, manager of plants operations.
At F.H. Huffman School, work included:
•replacing building envelope weather stripping;
•painting the gym, Grade 1 room, and outside doors;
•replacing floor tiles in the Grade 3 room; and
•replacing broken windows.
Work at Fort Frances High School included:
•reconstructing Room 151 (learning support centre);
•upgrading lighting in selected classrooms, two gyms;
•upgrading building automation controls;
•refinishing the large gym floor;
•installing low-flush toilets and urinals;
•installing low-flow aerators;
•weather stripping the doors;
•installing an air curtain on the shop bay door; and
•painting hallways and 15 classrooms.
At J.W. Walker School, work over the summer included:
•painting hallways and the principal’s office;
•constructing two portable classrooms; and
•sodding the primary playground.
Work at Robert Moore School included:
•upgrading a boys’ washroom;
•installing bulletin boards and white board at Rooms 10 and 12;
•painting the office hallway, door trims, and main floor west wing; and
•lowering the coat hooks and corkboards in the primary end.
Work at Atikokan High School included:
•renovating Room 31 (lighting, ceiling, and flooring);
•refinishing the main gym floor;
•upgrading lighting in classrooms and two gyms;
•installing the central control system for air handling units (AHUs), ventilators and boilers;
•replacing four AHUs;
•insulating supply air ducts;
•weather stripping all exterior doors;
•installing a high-efficiency boiler;
•painting room 31 and the boiler room entry;
•replacing understage doors and carts; and
•repairing the main entrance steps.
At North Star Community School, the work included:
•replacing tile flooring in Rooms 14 and 16, and the staff room;
•refinishing the gym floor;
•upgrading gym lighting;
•installing controls on AHUs and boilers;
•installing weather stripping on 24 doors;
•painting the foyer;
•installing new room identification signs; and
•installing access doors on three fan units.
At McCrosson-Tovell School, work included:
•upgrading interior and exterior lighting;
•replacing electric heaters;
•installing control systems;
•painting the hallway, office, Grade 6-8 room, and special education room;
•repairing ceramic tiles in the girls’ washroom; and
•replacing a broken window.
At Crossroads School, work included:
•installing privacy screens in change rooms;
•installing occupancy sensors ad destratification fans in the gym;
•replacing weather stripping; and
•integrating the building automation system.
Work at Donald Young School included:
•sanding and varnishing the stage floor;
•painting the Grade 2/3 room, French room, SK room, and speech room;
•relocating and painting the library.
At Sturgeon Creek School, work included:
•upgrading lighting in classrooms, gym, and exterior;
•installing destratification fans in the gym;
•sealing the gym roof/wall;
•weather stripping exterior doors;
•constructing storage rooms in the boys’ washroom;
•installing shelving in the JK/SK room;
•painting shelving, and the library, special education, Grade 4 room;
•installing an Excel 50 controller; and
•replacing electric heaters.
At Nestor Falls School, work included:
•upgrading lighting;
•replacing electric heaters; and
•installing weather stripping; and painting the stairwell, cupboards, and five doors (including casings).
At Rainy River High School, work included:
•upgrading science labs;
•upgrading the main entrance;
•upgrading lighting in classrooms, the gym, and exterior;
•refinishing the gym floor;
•installing a control system;
•sealing doors, pipe penetrations, and expansion joints;
•installing destratification fans in the gym; and
•painting doors and frames.
Finally, work at Riverview School included:
•painting the Grade 3 room, vice-principal’s office, doors and frames, and shelves in the Grade 7/8 room;
•upgrading lighting in the gym, classrooms and exterior;
•installing control systems for five AHUs;
•installing variable frequency drives on AHUs;
•sealing the gym roof and wall;
•weather stripping all exterior doors; and
•converting electric hot water to gas.
Crews placed sand and tilled playgrounds at all schools, as well as cut grass.
Heating systems, boilers, and cooling coils were cleaned and repaired at all schools for the winter season, and all fire alarms, extinguishers, electrical panels, elevators, and sprinkler systems were inspected and certified.
