Gardeners weary of trimming their beloved trees and shrubs, or those who aren’t sure how best to prepare flower beds for winter, are urged to attend a free seminar at the Fort Frances Public Library this Tuesday (Oct. 1).
Hosted by the Fort Frances Horticultural Society, the seminar which will teach people when and how best to prune shrubs and trees as well as how to prepare perennial beds for winter.
Anne Roddey, president of the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society and a master gardener, will be conducting the seminar.
“It’s very important to know when to prune and how to prune,” Marie Anderson, president of the Fort Frances Horticultural Society, said this morning.
“Lilacs bloom only on new wood so if you prune in the spring and take off the new wood, you will have no blooms that year,” she noted.
While often overlooked, fall preparations for coming frost is a very important time for plants. “If you don’t do things properly, you can lose all of your perennials,” Anderson warned.
The seminar is open to everyone, and those on hand will be encouraged to ask questions about their own gardens.
